The process ended up being genuinely difficult compared to what I’d expected.

After applying, I received an offer for a phone interview a couple of months later, and then I moved into a more intense on-site stage.

At the on-site interview, I gave a talk in front of three labs, which was the part that really raised the stakes. I also had individual meetings with lab members and a faculty person who worked across the group, and that full-day schedule kept me engaged from start to finish. In the end, I did get an offer, and the whole experience made it clear they were taking my fit and communication very seriously.
