My start was driven by learning the lab’s techniques rather than going through a formal interview.

I joined a training session in the lab and learned the methods there, then worked on my own project using that technique.

A professor in the lab was looking for someone to help conduct his project, and he asked me because I already knew how to use the technique. The difficulty was very easy and the selection felt very practical—based on demonstrated capability from the training and my hands-on work. It was basically a “show it, then get considered” pathway.
