I asked a professor directly for a lab role, and the process reflected how these positions are often filled—through referrals or through having taken a class with the professor.

In my experience, it really was on me to initiate interest and ask to be considered.

There wasn’t much of an interview structure to it; it was more about establishing the conversation and showing that I wanted to contribute to the lab. The difficulty was very easy, largely because the process didn’t involve multiple rounds or complicated screening steps. Overall, it felt more like starting a conversation that could lead to a position rather than going through a formal hiring loop.
