Zendesk Interview Guide
Everything we know about interviewing at Zendesk: the process stage by stage, what each round tests, compensation by level, and reports from candidates who interviewed.
Interviewing at Zendesk
What the process looks like, and what Zendesk is really testing for.
Zendesk’s interviews are a mix of recruiter screening, hiring manager conversations, and technical or practical evaluations that often culminate in presentations. Across reported steps, stakeholder management and cultural fit show up alongside core technical testing topics, plus you should expect problem solving and communication to be evaluated repeatedly.
The topics data is heavily weighted toward technical foundations: SQL is very prominent (percentile 92), and Data Structures and Algorithms and Machine Learning concept are at the top of the list (percentile 100). UX/UI design, project management, financial analysis, and machine learning are also all at percentile 100 in the extracted topic set, and the process includes live or practical assessments, case style work, and panel presentations where you explain your approach.
The process can be short in some reports, but timing is inconsistent across candidates. Candidate reports mention an end to end timeline of about two weeks in some cases, while other reports describe weeks of gaps between steps and delays in updates after the final panel, plus at least one report ended early for an administrative issue before additional interview rounds.
The most useful non-obvious fact: the evaluation does not just test answers, it repeatedly tests how you communicate and structure your work, via practical assessments, discovery or demo style simulations, and panel presentations, in addition to SQL and DSA topics.
The Zendesk interview process
5 stages, based on 516 candidate reports.
Recruiter Screen
Varies by candidateYou start with a recruiter conversation that covers your background and role alignment, and discusses interest and compensation expectations. Be ready for a basic screening discussion that sets the direction for the rest of the loop.
Hiring Manager Interview and Hiring Manager Conversation
Same general timeframe, varies by candidateYou meet with the hiring manager for deeper discussions about your experience and fit, and in some cases you discuss technical elements that test SQL skills. This portion also covers how you think about your work and fit for the CX landscape for at least some roles.
Technical Evaluation
Varies by candidateYou complete a technical evaluation that can include live coding and database querying to test SQL and programming skills. Depending on the role, practical scenarios and technical assessments are used to evaluate the relevant skill set.
Practical Assessment
Typically before panelsYou complete a take home assignment or online coding assessment reflecting real work. Some reports also describe simulated discovery calls, product demos, or case study presentations as part of this practical assessment phase.
Panel Presentation and Final Round
Varies by candidateYou present findings or strategies from the take home or practical work to a panel before an offer is made. Some reports also describe additional final evaluation rounds that include a comprehensive assessment of technical and interpersonal skills.
