Headway Interview Guide
Everything we know about interviewing at Headway: the process stage by stage, what each round tests, compensation by level, and reports from candidates who interviewed.
Interviewing at Headway
What the process looks like, and what Headway is really testing for.
You will interview through a recruiter screen first, then you should expect the core loop to be technical plus behavioral. Across the reported roles, the most distinctive emphasis is SQL and hands-on technical work, plus system design that tends to show up as modeling, API design, and architecture at the level of APIs and data modeling.
What the interviewers test is consistent with the topic distribution: SQL, algorithms and data structures, product sense, and engineering management all appear at very high prominence, and system design is the single highest prominence topic. You are also evaluated on practical communication and collaboration, because stakeholder communication is a recurring theme and the virtual onsite loop includes cross-functional collaboration.
In the reported process, you may see a virtual onsite style loop that mixes case study, behavioral, and cross-functional collaboration, followed by additional manager or executive conversations depending on the role. Be aware that candidate reports show no offers in the aggregated offer rate data, and several reports describe stalls after scheduling steps or after a recruiter interaction, so you should plan to be ready for both rapid technical evaluation and variable follow-up.
System design here is not just theory, it often ties directly to API design, modeling, and practical execution, and the process also heavily weights SQL and algorithms and data structures alongside product sense.
The Headway interview process
4 stages, based on 311 candidate reports.
Recruiter screen
VariesYou start with an initial conversation with a recruiter to align on your background, career goals, interest in the mission, and compensation expectations. Reports also describe the recruiter screen as covering fit and sometimes moving quickly into technical evaluation after this step.
Core technical and behavioral interviews, including virtual onsite
Same week or back-to-back sessionsYou may enter a virtual onsite style loop that evaluates coding skills, system design capabilities, and behavioral alignment. The reported onsite includes a structured case study, a behavioral interview, and cross-functional collaboration, and you may also see collaborative whiteboarding or a design presentation depending on the role.
Manager and executive conversations
VariesAfter the core loop, you may have conversations with a hiring manager and possibly additional interactions such as an executive conversation and a final offer discussion. In some reports, hiring manager interviews focus on technical and product sense, and others highlight the importance of leadership maturity and strategic alignment.
Reference checks
Final stepIf you progress, reference checks are reported as a final step involving verification of your background with past managers and colleagues. One report describes the step explicitly as background and references before an offer is extended.
