My first call was a screening-style conversation that started pleasant and then quickly got uncomfortable.

The recruiter/talent rep was personable and easy to talk to, and I answered a couple of light questions about my background. But the call didn’t really cover the role or the organization, and it ended up focusing on salary expectations very early.

After that, I was asked again by email what my salary expectations were. I pushed back because for a sales role that number depends heavily on details like OTE and the scope of what the job actually includes. Instead of digging into the role, I was told the hiring manager felt my experience was “too left field,” and my questions weren’t addressed.
