San Francisco, CAPosted Feb 2020 · Candidate report, summarized by Dataford

The process moved very quickly, but early on I noticed something off about how HR was thinking about roles.

They seemed confused between a statistician and a data scientist, and I got the impression they didn’t believe that an experienced statistician with a PhD could be qualified for the data scientist position.

Because of that, the interaction felt more like a mismatch in understanding than a review of my actual fit. It left me thinking I’d have to make clearer connections between my statistics background and what they considered “data science.”

Even without a long process, the experience was a reminder that communication and role alignment matter, and mine didn’t really happen.
