I had a fairly intensive set of steps: a few rounds of phone interviews followed by a data project that came with about a week to complete it.

The framing was that it was mainly in Python, and the goal was to discover potential “alphas” from the data.

Because it was structured like a discovery task, it felt like familiarity with the data itself—or with similar datasets—could make a real difference. The difficulty level was difficult overall, and the project component was the part that weighed the most.

I ended up not getting an offer. The interviews before the project felt like setup, but the one-week modeling work is what tested how I handled ambiguity and applied the right analysis rather than just answering questions.
