A big issue for me was a disconnect between what the recruiter told me and what the role actually seemed to be.

I spoke with the recruiter first about a software engineer position, and they set up a call with someone at the SSE level.

When I reached that interview, I was told they were really looking for someone closer to senior in experience—someone who could help set up a new team rather than just fill a standard SWE role. After getting rejected, I asked the recruiter what happened to the SE role I originally applied for, but I didn’t get any response.

I didn’t get an offer, and the reflection I’m left with is that the role itself may have changed under me, but the communication didn’t.
