I interviewed for a Software Engineer role where the first major technical step was an engineer-led phone screen focused on fundamentals rather than tricky surprises.

Phone interview (engineer-led) — I had questions mapped to my resume skills: design patterns like singleton, STL implementation understanding, multithreading and race conditions, IP and MAC address length, and what happens during a browser redirect.
In-person technical questions (C++ focus) — Another experience in the same general journey involved C++ language concepts like pointers and data structures drawn from established material. Outcome: I didn’t get an offer, and my takeaway was that solid baseline knowledge (networking, concurrency, and C++ fundamentals) was essential.
