My recruiter contact came from inside the company, and about a week later I spoke with the hiring manager.

After that, the process opened up in a way that made the mission feel real: I got time with the director and the VP of technology, and they laid out what they were trying to accomplish in a clear and honestly exciting way.

From there, I went through some phone and Skype interviews, and eventually I was invited to an on-site. The on-site itself felt unusually relaxed. I gave a presentation about my background, and other people I spoke with also presented, which made it feel more like an exchange than a grilling.

HR and recruiting stood out for how efficiently they handled everything from day
