My first steps were a bit transactional.

They asked me to do some tests related to the job scope, then they followed up with questions about how my previous job experience mapped to the role. After that, HR phoned to discuss pay and try to come to the lowest number they thought they could.

It didn’t feel especially technical beyond the job-scope tests, but it did feel like the process moved toward alignment and compensation fairly directly. I didn’t receive an offer, and I remember being left with the sense that the negotiation element was a major part of the final decision.
