I interviewed for a Software Engineer role at GitLab with a phased process that felt interesting and practical, anchored in merge request review.

Phone screen — A 20–30 minute HR call covered basic knowledge (including Rails) and work history.
Technical interview (merge request review) — I reviewed a merge request in a private repo ahead of time and then discussed my proposed changes and troubleshooting.
Manager interview — I had a leadership behavioral interview after the technical stage.
Director interview — I completed the final director interview. Outcome: I didn’t get an offer, but the merge-request technical conversation was the highlight.
