I interviewed for a software engineering role with a notably difficult, manager-reviewed process, and it focused on fit across multiple team perspectives.

Phone screen (HR) — I had an HR screen to discuss my background.
Hiring manager interview — I then covered role expectations and how my experience matched the position.
Multiple 1:1s with managers — I completed several one-on-ones with managers across different teams, each exploring my experience and fit for their specific work. Outcome: I didn’t get an offer; the takeaway was that preparation for cross-team fit and consistency of your story mattered in every conversation.
