I interviewed for a Java-heavy role with multiple onsite rounds that included small design exercises and deeper algorithm work.

Phone screen — core Java and basic algorithm questions.
Onsite: core Java deep dive — in-depth questions on threading and collections.
Onsite: mini design + defend — I designed things like a chess simulator and worked through stack/queue concepts, then defended choices.
Bar-raiser style round — focused on experience-level evaluation through complex algorithm/design.
Architect round — assessed overall design skills. Outcome: No offer; the process emphasized design and defensive reasoning, not just coding.
