I experienced a multi-step, referral-driven process with multiple phone interviews that felt awkward in how the interviewers interacted.

Phone screen (two interviewers) — a screen with the hiring manager and a direct report that was hard to read and felt inconsistent.
Additional phone interviews (higher management) — after about a week, I had two more phone calls with higher management; overall there were three phone interviews in two weeks. Outcome: No offer; the final decision came after several manager-level conversations, with no clear positive result.
