I had an initial conversation with a friendly recruiter, and the discussion itself was interesting.

It didn’t move forward to a second interview because I stumbled when they asked about my salary expectations.

I had been freelancing for a while, and I wasn’t prepared to translate that into the yearly contract term they were asking for. When that question came up, I didn’t handle it as well as I could have, and it ended my process quickly.

Even though the recruiter was supportive and the first chat went well, that one compensation question became the deciding factor for me. It was an honest misstep on my part, and I didn’t feel the need to make excuses about it.
