The log cabins that used to dot the landscape in the Land of Lincoln have given way to the three campuses of the University of Illinois. Established as a land grant institution in 1867, the university has grown to include campuses in Chicago, Springfield, and Urbana-Champaign (its flagship campus, which has a 17:1 student-teacher ratio). The system enrolls roughly 70,000 students at its traditional campuses as well as thousands more online. Students choose from more than 150 undergraduate programs and more than 100 graduate and professional programs. Graduates of the Urbana-Champaign campus include Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, astronauts, and Olympic medalists.
