Motional Interview Guide
Everything we know about interviewing at Motional: the process stage by stage, what each round tests, compensation by level, and reports from candidates who interviewed.
Interviewing at Motional
What the process looks like, and what Motional is really testing for.
Motional evaluates you through a sequence that is heavy on technical rounds, including a Virtual Onsite Panel that is described as four to five 45-minute rounds in one format, or a half-day loop of four to five interviews of about one hour each. Multiple reports describe the onsite as intentionally consistent and “show me technically,” with limited evidence of behavior-only rounds in some paths.
What you are tested on is anchored in their recurring topic footprint: system design, deep learning, machine learning fundamentals, and AV testing are each at percentile 100 in the extracted questions, and topics like autonomy ML systems and autonomy vehicles architecture are also highly represented. General coding interviews and quality assurance show up heavily as well, with general coding at percentile 96 and quality assurance at percentile 96, plus safety, compliance, and quality at percentile 92.
Across candidate reports, the process can be slow and scheduling-dependent, and even when it starts positively, later steps and decision timing determine the outcome. In the aggregated candidate data provided here, the overall offer rate is 0.0%, so you should treat this as a process where outcomes are uncertain and communication timing has a noticeable impact on candidate experience.
The most useful non-obvious fact is that your interview path may be mostly technical and can hinge on how well you connect your approach to validation, safety, and testing, not just general coding ability, and candidate experiences repeatedly emphasize that later technical steps and decision timing drive the result.
The Motional interview process
5 stages, based on 114 candidate reports.
Recruiter phone screen
Short callYou talk about your background and role alignment, with an emphasis in the reported descriptions on interest in autonomous vehicles. Prepare to explain what you want next and why Motional is a fit, since multiple reports describe the recruiter as checking alignment and interest.
HR screening and/or recruiter screening
Short screening stageOne reported step is an HR screening, and other reports include additional recruiter screens. Expect suitability questions and basic alignment on career goals and availability.
Manager and technical screening
45-60 minutes (reported for one technical screening)You may meet a hiring manager or team lead, and some descriptions include a live coding assessment focused on data structures and algorithms. Prepare to discuss your testing philosophy and past projects, since the technical screening descriptions include technical understanding and how you approach relevant work.
Virtual onsite panel and practical technical rounds
Half-day loop or four to five roundsA commonly reported stage is a Virtual Onsite Panel with four to five 45-minute rounds, or a half-day loop of four to five interviews of about one hour each. Topics across the extracted question set point to system design, deep learning and ML fundamentals, AV testing, and quality and safety, with general coding interviews also prominent.
Behavioral and culture fit (if included) and final panel dynamics
Final interview stageThere is a reported stage for Behavioral and Culture Fit, but not every report indicates it was present or that onsite was behavior-only. Prepare to discuss behavioral alignment, while still expecting much of the overall evaluation to be technical based on the process steps and topic prominence.
