Key Responsibilities
As a Data Engineer, your day-to-day will involve building and maintaining the infrastructure that powers Justworks. You will spend a significant portion of your time writing and reviewing dbt models, optimizing SQL queries, and ensuring that the data warehouse remains a reliable source of truth. You will be expected to own the end-to-end lifecycle of data assets, from ingestion to final delivery in BI tools.
Collaboration is key; you will act as a consultant for other engineering teams, helping them understand how their services produce data and how to integrate that data into the analytics ecosystem. You will also participate in cross-functional initiatives where you will work with product managers and business stakeholders to define requirements for new reporting capabilities.
Role Requirements & Qualifications
A strong candidate for this role possesses a blend of deep technical skill and the ability to operate independently in an ambiguous environment.
- Must-have skills: Advanced SQL proficiency, experience with cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift), and hands-on experience with modern transformation tools like dbt.
- Nice-to-have skills: Experience with orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, Prefect), knowledge of data governance frameworks, and a background in working within a SaaS or fintech environment.
- Soft skills: Demonstrated ability to manage stakeholder expectations, excellent verbal and written communication, and a proactive approach to identifying and solving technical debt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long should I spend preparing for the technical rounds?
A: Dedicate at least 10–15 hours to reviewing your past projects and practicing complex SQL challenges. Focus on the "why" behind your past architectural choices as much as the "how."
Q: What is the best way to handle a "combative" interviewer?
A: Maintain your professional composure. If an interviewer pushes back, acknowledge their perspective, provide your rationale based on your experience, and stay focused on the problem at hand rather than personalizing the interaction.
Q: Is this role fully remote?
A: Yes, many roles at Justworks are remote, but always verify current expectations with your recruiter as company policies can evolve.
Other General Tips
- Think in programs: When asked about a challenge, describe how you built a scalable system or program to solve it, rather than just describing a one-off fix.
- Prepare your stories: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your behavioral answers, focusing on your specific contribution.
- Study the values: Justworks is highly values-driven. Familiarize yourself with their core values and weave them into your examples.
- Ask thoughtful questions: Use your time at the end of the interview to ask about the team’s current data challenges or the roadmap for data governance.
