My first step was a short call with an engineering manager that lasted about half an hour.

It was relaxed and I got a clear sense that they were more interested in how I’d work with the team than in digging for obscure details. A few weeks later I flew out for an in-person day that took the whole time.

That onsite loop was laid back but wide-ranging: I spent time talking with multiple managers and project engineers, and we even did lunch with other engineers. It felt like the day was built to let me get comfortable and to let them understand how I’d fit into the projects and day-to-day environment. The overall vibe was friendly and easygoing rather than formal.
