After a chat with the hiring manager to discuss the role, I was sent into an online CodeSignal phone screen with heavy proctoring.

They monitored both my webcam and my screen, and the whole thing moved fast: four questions in just an hour.

What hurt me wasn’t the difficulty of the first concepts so much as the style and pacing. The early questions felt tedious, mostly around string manipulation, and I couldn’t get myself to keep going through them all. When I got to the later questions, the task description in the example didn’t provide enough visibility to reason through it—sometimes they only gave counts of subarrays without showing what those subarrays were, which made deriving the count feel almost impossible.
