I ended up getting invited after already having a pretty clear research fit, and the process started with two phone interviews with the same person.

The questions were mostly broad but pointed: I walked through my research background and talked through my career goals, and it felt surprisingly candid—there was a real discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the job rather than a pure sales pitch.
