Pasadena, CAPosted Oct 2011 · Candidate report, summarized by Dataford

I had a short, non-technical interview driven largely by a strong internal recommendation, with hiring moving quickly.

Manager screen via referral — I was contacted by a JPL group manager after a well-known scientist’s recommendation. The conversation was about 30 minutes, mostly reviewing my resume, experience, and what I hoped to gain at JPL; it emphasized personality screening and group fit rather than technical depth. Outcome: I didn’t go through a full process, and the manager hired me based on the recommendation and my quick screen—my takeaway was that a credible referral could outweigh a lengthy interview loop.
