I had a first-round interview and, a couple hours later, HR called me right on my phone to tell me I’d cleared it and that they wanted to schedule the second round.

I gave them availability for the next couple of days, and HR said she’d confirm the interviewer’s time slot and get back to me. Two days passed, and then I received an email saying they wouldn’t move forward.

The reason they gave felt weak and oddly unprofessional. It basically suggested I wasn’t the better fit compared to another candidate due to salary, even though there hadn’t been any real salary discussion with me during the process. It left me frustrated because it sounded like the decision had already been made without a proper conversation.
