I had a fairly standard start—apply online, then get invited to a phone interview, and the call itself was quick and pleasant.

I remember focusing on my travel and experience and feeling like the conversation was going well. In one call, we talked about why I wanted the job and my favourite destinations, and I left feeling confident enough to expect the next step.

But things turned when pay structure came up. I’d said I understood the salary would be a base plus commission, then when the base number was revealed—especially given the expectation to work weekends—it completely surprised me. I tried to regroup by saying it was still an incentive to perform, but the interviewer’s tone shifted and the call felt less warm
