Discord Software Engineer interview experience

MediumCandidate report, summarized by Dataford

I interviewed for Discord Software Engineer with a medium-to-hard distributed-systems theme centered on leader election using etcd, and the experience varied from collaborative pair programming to frustrating requirement churn.

Leader/follower system via etcd — I implemented a leader election flow using Etcd V2 coordination, with an HTTP endpoint that returned either a fixed response for the leader or the leader’s port for followers.
Beyond basic election (join + failover) — I discussed practical expectations like new nodes joining and automatic failover detection, with the interviewer encouraging immediate coding and brainstorming.
Implementation with specific API calls — I used HTTP requests against V2 APIs such as TTL, refresh, and compare-and-swap.
**Different attempt with poor guidance
