Discord Backend Engineer interview experience

Candidate report, summarized by Dataford

I interviewed for a Discord Software Engineer role through a fairly standard multi-round sequence, with medium technical difficulty and a mix of chat-server work plus systems/scaling questions.

Async chat server coding — I designed and built a chat server using asyncio, with positive feedback and no extra hidden add-ons.
Manager/behavioral interview — I covered my background and fit with behavioral questions.
Project deep dive — I walked through a detailed project and answered follow-ups.
Incident debugging — I debugged a simulated production issue: a sudden CPU spike, gathering metrics/logs to find the root cause.
System design: data/index choices — I discussed index and database decisions with a critical interviewer.
**Additional chat-server rounds
