I got an email from a manager to set up a technical phone interview a few days after I applied.

The call itself was about an hour, and the interviewer introduced their team and asked a combination of software and hardware questions. I realized quickly that my background didn’t cover the hardware angle they wanted—there wasn’t anything I could lean on from my resume—so I struggled to answer parts of the discussion.

The experience wasn’t just hard because the questions were technical; it was hard because I didn’t have the underlying context they expected. I ended the call feeling like I was trying to fill gaps in real time, and I left knowing I couldn’t represent my experience
