I went through a referral-based process that turned sour due to a non-existent role and a heavy time cost over the course of about a day.

Referral take-home (3 hours) — after being referred, I was asked to complete a substantial take-home assignment before speaking with anyone.
Recruiter call — following the take-home, I spoke with a recruiter who indicated the position didn’t actually exist and asked whether I’d be willing to relocate across the country. Outcome: I didn’t move forward; the main takeaway was that the process wasted my time without a clear need.
