My first step was a 60-minute online assessment, and it felt like it assumed a pretty high level of competitive programming knowledge.

Even though I went in feeling confident, I didn’t pass the technical interview that followed.

The technical questions felt either unusually tricky, very theory oriented, or strangely specific—things I didn’t view as the most defining parts of the knowledge you’d rely on day to day. I wasn’t sure if I just got unlucky with the question set, but the end result was that I moved no further.

Overall, the experience left me disappointed. I remember walking away feeling like the bar was narrower and more specialized than what I’d expected from the initial confidence I had going in.
