SQL Top 5 Regions Query

MediumSQL · PostgreSQL

Problem

A sales analytics team needs a quarterly regional revenue ranking. Write a SQL query to calculate total revenue for each region during the previous calendar quarter relative to the reporting date of September 15, 2026.

Output

  1. Return one row per region with columns region_name and total_revenue.
  2. Include regions with no qualifying sales, treating their total revenue as zero. Ignore sales whose region does not match a region record, sales with a NULL region, and NULL revenue values.
  3. Sort by total_revenue descending, then region_name ascending, and return only the first five rows.
