strtok Implementation

MediumPython

Problem

Implement strtok.

Asked in the Onsite stage. Completed in 25 minutes of the allotted 45 minutes, but interviewer expected a second question.

Write a function that behaves like strtok for a single input string: each call returns the next token from s, split by any character in delimiters, and returns None after the last token. Consecutive delimiters are treated as one separator, and leading or trailing delimiters do not produce empty tokens.

Function Signature

def strtok(s, delimiters):

Input

  • s: a string to tokenize
  • delimiters: a string containing delimiter characters

Output

  • Return the next token as a string, or None when no tokens remain

Constraints

  • 0 <= len(s) <= 10^4
  • 0 <= len(delimiters) <= 100
  • s and delimiters contain ASCII characters only
  • Repeated calls may be made with the same input string
  • Return None after the final token

Function Signature

def strtok(s, delimiters):
