String Transformation Practice

EasyPython

Problem

Given an input list of strings, split them and transform them into a specified output format (practical Python string manipulation).

Asked in the technical phone screen stage. Described as simple and unrelated to LeetCode.

Implement format_records(records). Each input string has the form title|year|genre1,genre2, with exactly three fields. Return a list where each record becomes title (year): genre1, genre2. Strip surrounding whitespace from every field and genre. Preserve the original record order.

Constraints

  • 1 <= len(records) <= 10^4
  • Every record contains exactly two | separators
  • Every record contains at least one genre
  • Titles, years, and genres do not contain |
