Stopping Within Distance

MediumPython

Problem

If a car is traveling 15m/s and needs to stop within 15m, how much break force is required?

Assume constant deceleration, flat ground, and no drag or rolling resistance. Return the magnitude of the required braking force as a scalar. You may assume the car's mass is provided as input.

Function Signature

def required_brake_force(mass, speed, stopping_distance):

Input

  • mass: car mass in kilograms
  • speed: initial speed in meters per second
  • stopping_distance: distance available to stop in meters

Output

  • A number representing the braking force in newtons

Constraints

  • 1 <= mass <= 10^5
  • 0 < speed <= 10^3
  • 0 < stopping_distance <= 10^5
  • Assume constant deceleration
  • Ignore drag, slope, and tire slip
