SQL Window Functions and Trees

HardSQL · PostgreSQL

Problem

Tell me about a time you used SQL window functions and other advanced techniques to solve a case study, including working with tree-like data structures.

Use the supplied case-study tables to demonstrate your approach. Return each non-root node with its direct parent, approved event value, and rank among its siblings.

Output

  1. One row per non-root node, with parent_id, parent_name, node_id, node_name, approved_value, and sibling_rank.
  2. Include nodes with no approved events as zero.
  3. Order by parent_id, then sibling_rank, then node_id.
