SQL Ranking: 3rd Highest Salary

MediumSQL · PostgreSQL

Problem

AXA XL's Financial Planning and Analysis team needs a department-level view of salary bands. Write a PostgreSQL query using a window function to display employees earning the third-highest distinct salary within each department.

Requirements

  1. Rank distinct non-null salaries independently within each department.
  2. Return every employee tied at the third-highest salary.
  3. Exclude employees without a department or salary, and exclude departments with fewer than three distinct salaries.
  4. Sort the output by department and employee ID.
