Problem

Explain the entire Spark shuffle, covering both shuffle read and write and the protocols used to share data over the network.

Asked in the Technical round 2 stage. Explain the lifecycle from an upstream map task producing shuffle data to a downstream reduce task fetching, merging, and processing it. Cover the relevant Spark components, metadata flow, data serialization, disk and memory behavior, network protocols, retry handling, and major performance bottlenecks.

Address the following:

  1. Describe shuffle write and partitioning.
  2. Describe shuffle read, block discovery, and fetch execution.
  3. Explain how executors and the driver exchange metadata and data.
  4. Discuss failure recovery, spills, and cleanup.
  5. Identify practical tuning and monitoring signals.
