Sorting Patient Records Function

EasyPython

Problem

Write a function to sort a list of patient records by last name.

Implement sort_patient_records(records), where records is a list of dictionaries containing patient_id, first_name, and last_name. Return a new list ordered lexicographically by last_name; records with identical last names must retain their original relative order. Do not modify the input list.

Constraints

  • 0 <= len(records) <= 10^4
  • Each record contains string keys patient_id, first_name, and last_name
  • Each last_name is a non-empty string
  • The input list must not be modified
  • Sorting is case-sensitive and uses standard lexicographic string order
