Second Highest Without Aggregates

HardSQL · PostgreSQL

Problem

AvidXchange wants to review compensation bands by department. Write a PostgreSQL query to find the second highest distinct salary in each department, without using any aggregate functions such as MAX() or COUNT().

Requirements

  1. Return one row per department that has at least two distinct salaries.
  2. Find the second highest distinct salary within each department.
  3. Do not use aggregate functions in the solution.
  4. Sort the final result by department_name.
