How to convert a string of Roman numbers into decimals?

Implement roman_to_decimal(roman), which receives a valid, canonical Roman numeral and returns its decimal integer value. Support the standard symbols I, V, X, L, C, D, and M, including subtractive pairs such as IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM. The input represents a value from 1 through 3999.

Constraints

1 <= len(roman) <= 15
roman contains only the characters I, V, X, L, C, D, and M
roman is a valid canonical Roman numeral
1 <= result <= 3999
