Your question is Principles of Revenue Recognition. Take a moment with it on the right.

Talk me through your thinking if you like. When you're confident, submit your answer and I'll grade it like a real screen (7/10 or better passes).

Problem

What are the principles of revenue recognition?

Asked in the interview stage. Explain the applicable framework under U.S. GAAP, including how an analyst determines when revenue is recorded rather than deferred.

Question / Task

  1. State the five-step revenue recognition model.
  2. Explain the key judgment in each step, including identifying performance obligations, determining transaction price, allocating consideration, and measuring satisfaction of obligations.
  3. Distinguish point-in-time from over-time recognition and explain how contract liabilities affect the financial statements.
  4. Give a concise illustrative calculation showing allocation and timing of revenue.

Constraints

Use ASC 606 terminology. Address variable consideration, contract modifications, and principal-versus-agent considerations at a high level. No company-specific facts are provided.
