Parse Year Ranges Into Sorted Unique Years

MediumPython

Problem

Parse a string of comma-delimited years and year ranges, and return an array of all individual years included with duplicates removed and sorted.

Implement parse_years(years) where years is a string containing individual four-digit years or inclusive ranges such as "2018-2020". Tokens may contain surrounding whitespace. Return a list of integers in ascending order. Inputs contain valid tokens, and range endpoints are ordered from lowest to highest.

Constraints

  • The input is a string of comma-delimited valid year tokens.
  • Each token is either a four-digit year or an inclusive range in the form start-end.
  • Range endpoints satisfy start <= end.
  • Tokens may contain surrounding whitespace.
  • The input may be empty or contain empty whitespace.
