Parse Logs for Error Messages

MediumPython

Problem

Write a function to parse log files for specific error messages.

Implement parse_error_logs(log_lines, error_messages). log_lines is a list of strings, and error_messages is a list of distinct, non-empty strings. Return a dictionary mapping each requested message to its total number of non-overlapping, case-sensitive occurrences across all log lines. Count repeated occurrences within one line independently. Return zero for messages that do not appear.

Example: parse_error_logs(["ERROR disk", "ERROR disk full"], ["ERROR", "disk"]) returns {"ERROR": 2, "disk": 2}.

Constraints

  • 0 <= len(log_lines) <= 1000
  • 1 <= len(error_messages) <= 100
  • Each log line is a string of length at most 10^4
  • Each error message is distinct, non-empty, and has length at most 100
  • Matching is case-sensitive
  • Occurrences are counted as non-overlapping matches
