Palindrome With Noisy Inputs

MediumPython

Problem

Implement a palindrome function that works with non-clean inputs and is as performant as possible.

Treat only ASCII letters and digits as significant, ignore whitespace and punctuation, and compare letters case-insensitively. Return a Boolean without constructing a cleaned copy of the input.

Function: def is_palindrome(s):
Input: one string. Output: True if the significant characters read identically forward and backward, otherwise False.

Constraints

  • 0 <= len(s) <= 1000000
  • s contains ASCII letters, digits, whitespace, or punctuation
  • Only ASCII letters and digits are significant
  • The comparison is case-insensitive

Function Signature
