Optimizing Slow SQL Queries

MediumSQL · PostgreSQL

Problem

How would you optimize a slow SQL query in a Samsara data pipeline?

Assume the query reads from event and device tables and must return the latest valid event per device for a reporting job. Keep the answer focused on how you would improve the SQL and why.

Output

  1. One row per device that has at least one valid event
  2. Columns: device_id, event_time, event_type, location_id
  3. Return the most recent valid event for each device
  4. Sort by device_id ascending
