Problem

Company Context

InsightFlow is a mid-stage B2B analytics platform used by 4,000 companies to build dashboards, monitor KPIs, and share business insights across teams. The company has strong adoption among business stakeholders, but usage among professional data analysts is inconsistent, especially after the first 60 days.

Problem

InsightFlow's leadership team believes it does not fully understand what truly motivates data analysts to adopt and champion a product in their workflow. Internal data shows that while 68% of analysts complete onboarding, only 29% become weekly active users after two months. Interviews suggest analysts value speed, trust in data, influence on business decisions, and opportunities to solve meaningful problems, but these needs are not clearly reflected in the current product roadmap.

You are the product manager for the analyst experience. Your task is to define what motivates data analysts in their work and translate that understanding into a product direction for InsightFlow.

Deliverables

  1. Identify the primary motivations and job-to-be-done for data analysts using InsightFlow.
  2. Segment data analysts into 2-3 meaningful user groups and explain how motivations differ across them.
  3. Recommend the most important product opportunities or features InsightFlow should prioritize for these users.
  4. Define how you would measure whether the product is better serving analyst motivations.
  5. Discuss key trade-offs in designing for analyst needs versus broader business-user simplicity.

Constraints

  • You have one quarter to define and validate the strategy, but only one engineering squad can build the first release.
  • InsightFlow cannot rebuild its full data modeling layer in the near term.
  • Any proposed solution must work for both SQL-savvy analysts and lighter technical users in smaller companies.
  • Leadership expects a clear recommendation tied to retention and expansion revenue.
