Largest Blob in a 2D Matrix

MediumPython

Problem

Find the largest blob within a 2D matrix.

A blob is a group of cells containing 1 connected vertically or horizontally. Return the number of cells in the largest blob, or 0 if the matrix contains no 1s.

Implement largest_blob(matrix), accepting a rectangular matrix of integers and returning an integer. Diagonal cells are not considered connected.

Constraints

  • The matrix may be empty.
  • For a non-empty matrix, all rows have the same number of columns.
  • Each cell contains either 0 or 1.
  • 1 <= rows, columns <= 1000 for non-empty matrices.
  • Connectivity is vertical and horizontal only.
