Instance vs Local Variables

MediumPython

Problem

What are instance variables and local variables, and where are they stored in memory?

Given a class definition and a sequence of operations, classify each referenced variable as instance or local, and identify whether it is stored with the object instance or on the call stack for the current function call.

Function Signature

classify_variables(operations)

operations is a list of dictionaries describing assignments and reads inside a class method. Return a list of strings in the same order, where each string is one of: "instance:object", "local:stack", or "unknown".

Constraints

  • 1 <= len(operations) <= 1000
  • Each operation has keys scope, name, kind, and target
  • scope is always "method"
  • kind is one of "assign" or "read"
  • target is one of "self" or "local"
