Identify Price Outliers in a Stream

HardPython

Problem

Create a program that reads prices and identifies outliers. (Iterators and OOP problem.)

Asked in the technical interview stage. Implement identify_outliers(prices), where prices is an iterable of numbers. Use the median absolute deviation (MAD): a price is an outlier when its distance from the median exceeds three times the MAD. If MAD is zero, every value different from the median is an outlier. Return outliers in their original order.

Constraints

  • 0 <= len(prices) <= 10^5
  • Prices contain finite integers or floating-point numbers
  • Outliers must be returned in their original order
  • The input may be any iterable of prices

Function Signature

def identify_outliers(prices):
